Man Who Stole Bunch Of Cryptocurrency Mining Rigs In Iceland Flees Jail And Country
The infamous “Big Bitcoin Heist” star, the bad boy of Iceland’s cryptocurrency mining, has fled the country. As written in Iceland’s Frettabladid newspaper, Sindri Thor Stefansson was being detained and held in Sogn prison, which is an open prison. How Scandinavian!
After escaping prison Stefansson drove to Keflavik International Airport, where he boarded a flight to Sweden. He used fake passport to do all that.
In a letter to Frettabladid newspaper Stefansson claims that he is innocent. He claims that he was told by police he is free to go. “I simply refuse to be in prison of my own free will, especially when the police threaten to arrest me without explanation,” he said the article. He also said that police forced him to sign a statement agreeing to stay in custody.
“I’m not trying to say that it was the right decision to leave, I really regret it… I didn’t expect an international arrest warrant to be issued against me, as I was legally free to leave, and believed it was out of the question that I would be labelled a fugitive. I would never have done this if I didn’t believe I was a free man.”
Stefansson did not say where he is staying, but still told to newspaper that he has a roof over his head, has a car to drive and fake documents.
“It would be no problem if that’s what I wanted, but I would rather face this in Iceland, so I’ll be back soon,” he claims. Icelandic police officials refused to comment the matter.
